Michael Tallhamer, a graduate student at Cleveland State University’s Department of Chemistry and Physics, received the OSC Graduate Conference Student Achievement Award during OSC’s Graduate Student Workshop and Conference held on August 8 and 9.
OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) concluded its 2003 summer education programs with successful results. This season’s programs offered unique learning opportunities for many groups, from college professors and high school teachers to graduate, high school, and even middle-school students. This year was particularly successful in helping OSC fulfill its mission to help others learn high performance computing.
Approximately 60 professionals from academia, industry and the military attended the Fifth Annual Summer Institute for Advanced Computation (SIAC), sponsored by the Information Technology Research Institute and Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). This year’s SIAC, held at Wright State University on August 27-29, 2003, focused on Homeland Security Computing.

Columbus, OH -- July 14, 2003 -- The Ohio SchoolNet Commission and the Ohio Department of Education have joined the Third Frontier Network as founding members of the nation’s most advanced statewide fiber optic service for education and research.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) Governing Board has named Dr. Stanley C. Ahalt, The Ohio State University (OSU) Professor of Electrical Engineering, to be its new Executive Director, effective July 1, 2003.
“We are very fortunate to have in Ohio one of the best people in the world to lead OSC,” said Dr. Joe Steger, Governing Board Chair and University of Cincinnati President. “After an international search, it became evident that Dr. Ahalt, an outstanding scholar, researcher and leader, is the right match for OSC.”
A new Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) advisory council has been formed to provide direct input into OSC and OSC Networking operations.
The new advisory group consists of state intra-university council (IUC) Chief Information Officers (CIO). The OSC Information and Research Officers Advisory Council will actively participate in long-range strategic planning, give technology leadership and management advice, and have the authority to establish subcommittees for specific tasks.
Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has announced that 12 high school finalists will embark on its Summer Institute (SI) 2003: A Prime Year for Supercomputing.
The OSC SI Program has been offered to Ohio’s brightest high school freshmen and sophomores for 15 years. SI gives students the opportunity to work with OSC’s most advanced supercomputers.
The 45th Annual Cray User Group Conference held on May 12-16, 2003 and hosted by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), was deemed a success by more than 160 attendees.
CUG2003 was held at the Hyatt on Capitol Square in downtown Columbus.
This year’s theme, “Flight to Insight,” was chosen to honor Ohio’s rich heritage and numerous contributions to the aerospace industry. The conference also highlighted the centennial anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ flight.
The National Computational Science Alliance (NCSA) has awarded OSC $6,000 to fund an undergraduate researcher. The researcher will develop utilities and applications to support Access Grid user services.
