Hang Liu, an Ohio University physics and astronomy graduate student, received the OSC/SGI Outstanding Graduate Student Award at the OSC/SUG Graduate Student Conference on August 12, 2001. Graduate students from various Ohio universities displayed their research in a series of thoughtful and interesting papers, presentations and poster sessions.

The High Performance Computing (HPC) division of OSC is sponsoring a Graduate Student Conference/Workshop at OSC on August 10 and 11, 2001.

The purpose of the Conference/Workshop is to introduce graduate students from around the state to the resources and capabilities of OSC, as well as to exchange information about research projects being undertaken by other graduate students in Ohio.

COLUMBUS, Ohio and MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) and SGI (NYSE: SGI) announce the launch of a new cluster from SGI utilizing the Itanium-based Silicon Graphics® 750 system, making this cluster one of the fastest in the world.

Newly appointed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Timothy J. Muris will provide the keynote speech on Thursday morning October 4, at Privacy2001. The conference, one of the top privacy events in the country, will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio October 2-4, and will be attended by more than 250 leaders and policy makers from government, industry and consumer organizations. Windows On The Future provides a forum in which academic institutions, research centers, corporate laboratories and government agencies can share knowledge, exchange ideas, and form networking relationships that will collectively benefit Ohio's higher education and industrial communities. This conference will focus on technology briefings by leading researchers in areas such as Internet engineering, networking, communications, and technology development.

 

OSC's HPC Division has announced that computing systems have been awarded to nine Ohio higher education institutions. Thirty-four researchers submitted proposals in the competition for academic cluster computers. In addition to the processing units, OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) will provide onsite maintenance, software, training, and system administration advice.

The Cluster Ohio Project, an initiative of OSC, the Ohio Board of Regents, and the OSC Statewide Users Group, is an effort to encourage faculty to build local computing clusters.

 Ohio businesses facing the challenges of keeping pace with constantly changing technology will soon have a solution. With the financial support of the Ohio Technology Action Fund and other organizations, Platform Lab, a software testing and development facility, has announced that advanced scheduling is available to organizations and businesses.

The Air Force Research Laboratory announced today that the University of Hawai'i (UH) has been awarded the contract to operate and manage the Maui Supercomputing Center, located at the Maui Research and Technology Park in Kihei. The contract, which will begin October 1, 2001, may be extended for up to 10 years and has a potential value of $181 million. This is the largest single contract award in the history of the University of Hawai'i.
