Dr. Russell M. Pitzer

The Ohio Supercomputer Center is in the process of procuring a new high performance computing system this summer, and in line with its tradition of naming its systems after pioneers with an Ohio connection, the center looked to its earliest days.

Russell M. Pitzer, the honoree and now emeritus professor of chemistry at The Ohio State University, was among a few individuals who began discussing the possibility of bringing high performance computing to Ohio higher education, even before the center was established in 1987.

Columbus, Ohio (May 29, 2018) — Seventeen Ohio high school students will be spending two weeks this summer at the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s 29th annual Summer Institute, June 10-22 at The Ohio State University.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 14, 2018) – Developers of the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s innovative web-based portal for accessing high performance computing services have recently upgraded its capabilities.

OSC recently announced the release of Open OnDemand 1.3, the first version using its new RPM Package Manager, or Red Hat Package Manager, a common standard for distributing Linux software.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 6, 2018) — The demand for high performance computing in Ohio is relentless, and it does not discriminate by field.  At Thursday’s Ohio Supercomputer Center Statewide Users Group (SUG) spring conference, OSC clients in fields spanning everything from astrophysics to linguistics gathere

The rise of antibiotic resistance among common infectious bacteria is a worrisome health threat that has many scientists looking for a solution. Jennifer Hines, Ph.D., professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Ohio University, is one of the few looking to ribonucleic acid (RNA) structures for new drug discovery. Her research group is studying a key regulator for bacterial gene expression made up of RNA, called a riboswitch, that could be crucial in designing new drugs to kill bacteria.

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio Supercomputer Center will host a free webinar to discuss topics related to its Open OnDemand software project at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29. The Customizing and Extending Open OnDemand Webinar will feature live demonstrations on OnDemand installations from different sites, including the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Tufts University. OSC experts will provide examples of how to configure OnDemand and extend the installation with custom branding and applications.

Off the top of your head, how many languages can you name? Ten? Twenty? More?

It is estimated there are more than 7,000 languages worldwide. For those involved in disaster relief efforts, the breadth and variety of that number can be overwhelming, especially when addressing areas with low resources.

State-of-the-art supercomputers, sophisticated software and high-speed research networks will be on tap as central-Ohio technology experts travel this weekend to Denver for SC17 (sc17.supercomputing.org/), the international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage and analysis.

In a week marked by a 30-year milestone, researchers who are breaking new ground came face to face Thursday with the computational experts helping them explore uncharted territory.

A day after the Ohio Supercomputer Center celebrated its 30th anniversary jointly with the Ohio Academic Recources Network (OARnet), the Center held its Statewide Users Group (SUG) Autumn Conference. SUG is a volunteer group composed of the scientists and engineers who provide OSC’s leadership with program and policy advice and direction to ensure a productive environment for research.

An innovative web-based portal for accessing high performance computing services has matured beyond the beta phase and now is available to HPC centers worldwide.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has launched Open OnDemand 1.0, an open-source version of OSC OnDemand, the Center’s online, single-point-of-entry application for HPC services.
