Ohio Supercomputer Center Workshop Gives Researchers, Developers Edge in Managing Software Projects

Columbus, OH -- October 11, 2006 -- As software code bases grow larger and more complex, it becomes more challenging to manage these projects. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s (OSC) workshop, Software Development Tools, provides the tools to help researchers and developers with their software projects.

This three-day workshop will be held on October 24 – 26, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., in OSC’s BALE theater at no charge. Attendees should have some Unix experience prior to attending the workshop. They are encouraged to attend only the sessions that are applicable to their projects and needs. Instructors recommend that those who are new to OSC attend both sessions on day one.

“This workshop provides a solid foundation for those who are currently using OSC’s high performance computing resources or those who would like to use our systems in the future,” said Jim Giuliani, OSC’s Science and Technology Support Lead. “This course is a conglomeration of content from some of our best courses and is relevant for software developers and scientific researchers regardless of their disciplines.”

Primary workshop topics include compiling, debugging, and version control of source code on Linux and Unix systems. Examples of code in a number of programming languages will be available in hands-on labs. This course is not intended to teach a particular programming language, but rather to focus on tools to manage and simplify developing and maintaining large, complex software projects.

Several OSC technical support staff members will teach the workshop. The tentative agenda includes:

* Day one morning: The Unix environment
* Day one afternoon: Batch processing
* Day two morning: Compilers
* Day two afternoon: Automated compilation and build management
* Day three morning: Debugging
* Day three afternoon: Version control
