Overview | Participants | Projects | Presentations | Sponsors | Facebook

In its 14th year, OSC's Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) 2012 is a success for all involved! Everyone who participants can take credit for the great outcome of YWSI and its rewards.

Students will increase their computer skills, create new friendships, learn to work on a team, and gain exposure to campus life. Students will leave YWSI with a greater confidence in their individual learning abilities and their ability to adapt while working and living in a new environment with new friends of similar interests.

Projects

The YWSI team projects are designed to challenge students and encourage cooperation and rapport building with peers.

Students examined first-hand the human impacts on biological systems, how humans affect water chemistry (thus impacting biological systems), and the importance of habitat to the systems' survival. Students also measuree the number of organisms, analyzed water chemistry using standard test kits, and evaluated habitats in and around a clean river. They then compared their data to publicly available data, such as research data from the U.S. EPA. Each project required the "scientists" (students) to understand the problem, analyze the data, and visualize the results. Individual projects introduced fundamental computer skills and provided the students with an understanding of a variety of computer applications. During the program, they became familiar with spreadsheet and presentation software and build their own web pages using the HTML language.
